Chapter 4: Brainiac 'Brainy' Smurf ♂️

Appearance: Average height and build. Purple eyes. White hat, white footsie pants, round black glasses, oversized brown backpack.

Relatives: Alchemist Smurf (father), Warrior Smurf (mother), Smurfette (adopted sister)

Age Bracket: Young adult.

As a Smurfling, he went by the nickname Glasses. He tried to choose the name Knowledgeable Smurf, but it didn't stick.

He tends to use big words when speaking, and has the nastiest habit of using run-on sentences. He loves to ramble.

He is the proud owner of a 'Smurfway', which he rides regularly. Sometimes he reads while riding it, but he's pretty good at not bumping into things.

He may not be Clumsy levels of ungraceful, but he still trips over his own feet more than most Smurfs.

He once spilt a potion on a ladybug. He nursed it back to health out of guilt, but it was forever changed. He adopted it as a beloved pet, naming it Snapshot/Snappybug.

He deeply respects and looks up to his parents, especially his Papa. He tries very hard to become a master potionmaker and grand leader just like his dear father.

A big milestone for Brainy will be when he realizes that he hates potions and doesn't even want to lead anything, politics are boring and stressful. He just wants to read and run experiments and maybe write a few thousand books that only Clumsy will actually read.

Temporarily filled in as village librarian despite his protests. Long story short, he lives in his public library now.

His pseudo big brother figure is Hefty. His best friend (and eventually more) is Clumsy. Despite initial dislike, he does come to see Smurfette as his sister and loves her deeply. Over time he manages other friendships, though usually quite against his will — these include Historian, Barista, and Jokey (this would be where the against his will most strongly comes into play).

Arrogant, smug, and incapable of admitting when he's wrong. He will learn how to be comfortable with his own talents and admitting when he doesn't know something... someday.

It's important to note that Brainy's intelligence isn't what isolates him.

The village reveres Alchemist for his intelligence. They like Handy despite his own mad scientist side. There are many intelligent Smurfs that are beloved.

Brainy is ostracized because he's mean, incapable of admitting when he's wrong, overly controlling, and always trying to tell others how to do their jobs even when he doesn't actually know how to do their jobs. He demands respect, obedience, and trust without earning it. He can't apologize and often deflects blame.

And he'll never 100% grow out of all that, but he WILL grow. And someday the village will think of bossy, annoying Brainy Smurf as a distant memory, replaced by their eccentric town librarian and resident mad scientist.

Brainy is legitimately a genius — but his need to ALWAYS be right and his constant guesswork when he doesn't know something rather than admitting he lacks specific information makes him come off as far less intelligent than he actually is, something that takes him a while to realize.

Brainy's attempts to justify and prove his intelligence actually make others doubt him, because they see him constantly telling them how to do their jobs 'better' in incorrect ways, see him deflecting and stumbling and insisting that he's right even when he's provably in the wrong, and they quite understandably write him off as all talk and no substance.

Ironically, Brainy will only gain the respect he so craves after he starts admitting when he can't do something. Only when he can say 'I don't know' and 'I need help' and 'I was wrong' and 'you're better at this than I am' without flinching will other Smurfs start realizing how intelligent he actually is.

Some already know. Clumsy knows. Hefty knows. Smurfette knows. Even Jokey knows. But the only way for everysmurf to know is if Brainy stops caring whether they know or not.
