Chapter 46: Chocolate/Apprentice Smurf ♂️

Special Trait: Candy making (especially chocolate)

Job(s): Candyman, sorcerer's apprentice.

Appearance: Average height and build. Orange eyes. Dark blue hat covered in stars, dark blue robe with oversized sleeves, white shoes. When among Smurfs, he wears striped overalls and a white hat.

Age Bracket: Older-young adult or adult.

A chocolate maker who secretly works for Gargamel.

But like, is overall a nice(ish) guy and a normal Smurf. He's just a punchclock villain acting as Gargamel's long-suffering and exasperated assistant/minion who does his bidding in exchange for magic lessons.

So Gargamel's like "Smurf! Go gather mushrooms for my potion!"

And he's all like "[long dramatic sigh] yes Gargamel..." and grumbles while he drags a smurf-sized basket behind him to get the stupid mushrooms. XD

Because his teacher is Gargamel, he's very bad at magic, and even more accident-prone than his so-called mentor.

Despite everything, a part of him is fond of Gargamel. A little. Mostly he just thinks he's an idiot.

Bonds with Azrael over shared annoyance and exasperation with their 'master'.

Maybe there would be a moment before the other Smurfs know where Chocolate Smurf almost blows his cover because he forgets he's supposed to fear Azrael — maybe even one where he secretly talks Azrael into not attacking because of something happening that day (maybe some contest he's been looking forward to is happening, maybe he had a moment of sympathy for another Smurf's goals, whatever), and then badly covers up how he 'escaped' Azrael and is believed anyways.

In my head, it wouldn't be obvious at first that Chocolate and Apprentice are the same Smurf, with the rare but not unique eye color being the biggest clue. There'd be some fakeouts and foreshadowing before the audience learns (long before the other Smurfs do) that they're one and the same.

I as well find it funny to imagine Chocolate causing magical mishaps in the village and trying to hide his abilities from the other Smurfs. Maybe even accidentally cursing a batch of chocolate and trying to deal with it in increasingly ridiculous ways before his secret double life can be revealed.

I figure there would be a lot of back-and-forth in his arc, keeping the audience guessing which side he'll fully commit to for a long time before it finally happens. I want him to be someone the audience begins to root for, before reminding them that he's someone they need to root against.

I think that if he was ever discovered and had to choose between being Chocolate or Apprentice, he'd choose Apprentice. He may be a punchclock villain, but that's still a type of villain.

He might avoid actively hurting or capturing his fellow Smurfs, but he still feeds intel to and actively assists the man who is trying to turn them all into tests subjects and power sources.

He might have a place in the village and not actively hate any of his fellow Smurfs, but he has no love for them either. I suppose I have to correct myself, because he isn't a normal Smurf — he's a wizard's henchman, and it's a role he thrives in no matter how exasperated or annoyed or overburdened he gets.

He's not exactly evil, he's just... putting his own self interests first, in the worst way.

He wouldn't be completely selfish, though. He's still a Smurf, after all, and he'd have his moments of being genuinely compassionate or helpful. He'd probably even have a scene after switching fully to Gargamel's side where he uses what little magic he has to save the Smurfs from some other threat before running off back to Gargamel's hovel, showing he still somewhat cares about his own kind even after everything — just not more than he cares about the life he's built on the villains' side.
